The phenomenon of Ankle Arthritis

There are many factors both genetic and environmental that contribute to the disease process. In many cases, patients may have a predisposing ankle injury and/or loose ligaments around the ankle joint leading to abnormal alignment and accelerated breakdown. In other cases, the cushioning within the joint wears down with age. Loss of cartilage at the ends of ankle bones, poorly functioning support from the surrounding ankle ligaments, bone spurs and bruising are frequent findings in arthritis of the ankle. Often overlooked, the ankle joint environment that surrounds all of the ankle joint tissues becomes “catabolic” meaning that it contains an increased level of destructive enzymes that destroy the ankle joint over time.

Downfalls of ankle joint surgery

Ankle joint surgery is an invasive procedure. In some cases, surgeons will “clean up” or cut out part or all of the remaining ankle cartilage or cushion. Surgical alternatives include fusing the ankle joint which results in less joint mobility and increased stress on surrounding areas of the ankle and leg. Complicating factors include prolonged downtime, hardware misalignment and risks such infection, and blood clots in the legs. Additionally, hardware may loosen requiring additional follow up surgery.

A Bio-Restorative Stem Cell procedure for ankle arthritis

Traditionally, the only treatment for those with ankle arthritis was an invasive ankle surgery that involved cutting out existing cushioning tissue or simply fusing the bones of the ankle as noted above.
A Bio-Restorative Stem Cell procedure for those with ankle joint arthritis is an ultra-minimally invasive same-day injection procedure designed to alleviate pain, improve function, and slow ankle joint degeneration with an aim at joint preservation. In addition to being less invasive than surgery, the procedure conveys less risk of complications and in many cases less downtime. Though it is not covered by insurance carriers, out of pocket costs for this procedure are often comparable to ankle joint surgery when considering copayments and loss productivity associated with surgery. Most importantly, this joint preserving procedure allows you to preserve remaining ankle joint cartilage (cushion) and avoid altered ankle mechanics that result from fusion surgery.

In other words, the Stem Cells from your own body harness your own body’s healing capability to naturally restore, reduce pain and get you back to doing the things you love.
